Legend of the Dev Uthani Ekadashi

As per the texts, Bhagwan Vishnu used to stay awake for many years, dealing with his duty of defeating evil. This messed up his sleep, and he ended up sleeping for many years unexpectedly. This irregular sleeping pattern bothered his wife, Devi Lakshmi. She asked him to fix it so she could get some rest. Bhagwan Vishnu realised he was troubling Devi Lakshmi and other gods. He decided that the time when the world ends, known as ‘Pralaya Kaleen,’ would be his deep sleep or ‘Maha Nindra.’ The four months he takes a shorter nap would be ‘Alpa Nindra,’ and it would be exceptional for his followers. He said that devotees who serve him during this time, organising festivities for his awakening, will have Bhagwan Vishnu bless their homes.

Therefore, he chose to sleep for four months every year during the rainy season. It is believed that the divine deity starts sleeping, known as ‘Yoga Nidra,’ on Dev Shayani Ekadashi in the month of Ashadh (around June and July) and wakes up on Devutthana Ekadashi.

The puja Vidhi is as follows:

• On Dev Uthani Ekadashi, start your day by waking up early, taking a vow to fast, and reflecting on Bhagwan Vishnu. Devotees observe a day-long fast for Bhagwan Vishnu.
• On this day, it is essential to purify by taking a bath and wearing clean clothes. After your bath, draw the feet of Bhagwan Vishnu in a square in your house’s courtyard.
• Sketch pictures of Bhagwan Vishnu on a mortar and fill it with fruits, jujube, water chestnuts (Singhara), sugarcane, seasonal fruits and sweets. Cover it with a lid.
• In the evening, light earthen Diyas outside homes, at the place of worship, and in temples.
• On this day, dry fruits like almonds, pistachios, etc. can be consumed along with bananas, mango, grapes, etc., 
• At night, worship all Gods and Goddesses, including Bhagwan Vishnu, with complete devotion. To wake up Bhagwan Vishnu from his deep slumber, ring bells and blow the Shankha.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi may be known by different names among various devotees, but what remains common is its immense reverence.
