Rahu and Ketu – names alone are capable of making a person fearful and why not, since ancient times, these faulty (if they are, in your kundali) planets have brought nothing but trouble. 

When all the planets in a person’s kundali i.e. Mangal, Chandra, Brihspati, Shukra, Shani, Surya, and Budh are placed between the shadow planets – Rahu and Ketu, Kalsarpa Dosha is formed. Besides this,  pitra doshas, bad karmas of previous birth and the killing of innocent animals especially reptiles are also some of the causes that result in the formation of Kal Sarpa Doshas.

Category or Types of Kal Sarpa Doshas

The following types of Kaal Sarp Dosha are possible based on the specific planetary positions: 

• Vasuki Kaal Sarp Dosha: When the rahu is in the 2nd house and the ketu is present in the 9th house, with all the planets squeezed in between, Vasuki Kaal Sarpa Dosha forms. 

It deteriorates the native’s relationship with his/her siblings along with disturbances in the family. Besides, the finances of the family suffer as well. It may also lead to hypertension and stress. The duration of this dosha is generally 36 years.

• Kulik Kaal Sarp Dosha: When the rahu is in the 2nd house, and Ketu is present within the 8th house, with all the planets squeezed in between, Kulip Kaal Sarp Dosh forms.

The native faces failures, humiliation, financial issues, unhappiness, and speech disorders. It causes problems in society. The duration of this dosha is generally 33 years.

• Shankhpal Kaal Sarp Dosha: When the rahu is within the 4th house and ketu – the 10th house, with all the planets squeezed in between Shankpal Kaal Sarpa Dosh forms. 

The native would suffer financial issues along with health problems. The native will also have a hard time making friends and enjoying life. Relationships with mothers and fathers also suffer. The duration of this dosha is generally 42 years.

• Anant Kaal Sarp Dosha: When the rahu is in the ascendant (first house) and Ketu is in the 7th house with all the planets squeezed in between, this dosha forms. It is also known as Vipareeta Kaal sarp yog

A person is likely to face health-related issues, along with financial problems. It also affects the marriage life of natives, by creating misunderstandings, doubts, frequent quarrels, and different thoughts which can result in separation.  The duration of this dosha is generally 27 years.

• Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Dosha: Rahu in the 6th house and the Ketu in the 12th, with all the planets squeezed in between, this dosha forms.

It causes financial troubles. The duration of this dosha is generally 54 years.

• Takshak Kaal Sarp Dosha: Rahu in the 7th house, and Ketu in lagna led to the formation of this Dosha.

It affects the marriage prospects of ‌natives by causing delays. Even after that, there is unhappiness because of constant tensions with in-laws.

• Shankachood Kaal Sarp Dosha: When the rahu is in the 9th house and the ketu is in the 3rd house, it would make a native’s life devoid of parental affection.
• Ghatak Kaal Sarp Dosha: When the rahu is in the 10th house, and Ketu is in the 4th house, it causes conflicts in the family, and the native can be dissatisfied with his work.
• Vishdhar Kaal Sarp Dosha: When the rahu is in the 11th house, along with ketu in the 5th house.

• Padam Kaal Sarp Dosha:  Rahu in the 5th house along with Ketu in the 11th house, with all the planets squeezed in between, this dosha forms.

Remedies of Kal Sarp Dosha

Let’s talk about remedies now. Vedic astrology not only tells us about the Doshas and their consequences but their remedies as well. Some general remedies that you can perform to get rid of Kaal sarp dosha are: 

• Chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” and Maha Mrityunjay mantra. Shiva and Parvati are the ruling deities of rahu. If possible, visit any of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Chanting the Gayatri mantra 108 times is also considered good. 
• Pray to “Nagraj” – the god of snakes, along with observing fast on Nag Panchami.
• Worshipping the peepal tree and daily meditation.
• Do not harm any animal, especially reptiles and snakes. Performing remedies and observing fasts alone won’t do anything, complement them with good karma.
• Performing Kaal Sarpa Dosh Nivaran Pooja.
• It is also said that you should adopt a dog as a pet, which pleases Lord Bhairav, and his blessing acts as a cure against this Dosha.

Though, rahu and ketu always don’t have negative effects. Strong rahu and Ketu can give you the richness of both ‌worlds – spiritual as well as material.
