Realising his mistake as Amrit was not for demons, Shri Vishnu released his Sudarshan Chakra towards Swarbhanu as he was trying to run away and slashed his head even before Amrit could reach Swarbhanu’s throat. The Sudarshan Chakra cut Swarbhanu’s body into two parts; the head became Rahu and the body Ketu. 

According to Vedic Hindu Astrology, both Rahu and Ketu are malefic planets, but Rahu is more damaging and malefic than any other planet (Grah). It is believed Rahu carried wicked thoughts in him since birth.
