On the last day of the Bengali month of Bhadra, Vishwakarma Puja is performed in Eastern India,  West Bengal, Orissa, Tripura, Bihar and Jharkhand. It is also known as Bhadra Sankranti, Vishwakarma Jayanti, Biswakarma Puja or Kanya Sankranti. 

In certain areas of the country, especially North India and states such as Bihar, it is also observed after Diwali. As per the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated in the month of “Magh”. In Kerala, it is observed on the Rishi Panchami Day. Apart from India, this day is also celebrated in Nepal.

Significance of Vishwakarma Puja

The greatness of Vishwakarma is stated in great detail in the Rig Veda. As per texts, he was the divine architect of the whole world. He is also the creator of powerful weapons of God and is behind the creation of Pandavas’s Mahasabha. Also, as per the request of Shri Krishna, he created the city of Indraprastha, on the west of river Yamuna. Shiva’s Trishul and Vijay Dhanusha of Arjun are also his creations.

As per texts, Swarga in the Satya Yug, Lanka in the Treta Yug, and Dwarka in the Dwapra Yug were built by him.

• At several places, lunch is organised for workers. 
• In some places, on this day, there is a tradition of flying kites. It is believed that Bhagwan Vishwakarma has built flying chariots and weaponry for God, that is why kites are flown, to admire his skill and honour him. He is famous for the creation of Pushpak Viman for Lord Kuber.

Vishwakarma Puja Vidhi (Rituals)

• Devotees should begin by taking a bath and purifying themselves.
• Then, they should clean all the tools and machines used by them in their craft.
• Next, they should perform puja of all the instruments.
• During the puja, they should keep a picture of Bhagwan Vishwakarma along with Bhagwan Vishnu.
• Prepare an Ashtadal Rangoli. Then, place 7 types of grains on it. 
• Devotees should offer gulal, turmeric, fruits, flowers, nuts and sweets to God.
• During puja, devotees need to fill a kalash with Jal and keep it with them.
• Recite, “Om Shri Srishtanaya Sarvasiddaya Vishwakarmaaya Namo Namah”, with utmost devotion.
